After noticing how our PrimalCon guests have ventured to the west coast from all over the United States, Canada, Europe, and Australia, and receiving plenty of constructive feedback that it might be nice to branch out to other locations, we have decided to bring PrimalCon to New York this summer, from June 5th-8th at the Mohonk Mountain House in New Paltz, NY.

Befitting the life-changing experience that is PrimalCon, we have discovered a truly one-of-a-kind Victorian castle resort located on secluded parkland in the lush Hudson Valley, 88 miles North of New York City.  While the pictures of Mohonk Mountain House are spectacular, you simply have to visit this place in person to appreciate its splendor.

While freeway transportation is easy from the New York-area airports 90 minutes South, or Albany airport 60 minutes North, Mohonk is a world apart from the frenzy of urban life. This is one of the classic New York state resorts, family owned and operated since 1869. Mohonk is a sprawling 280-acre facility featuring sweeping lawns, award-winning gardens, a beautiful lake, and extensive hiking trails.

Dining: Mohonk is an all-inclusive resort with fabulous dining options presented by award-winning chefs and featuring the freshest ingredients, sourced locally whenever possible. For PrimalCon, we've reserved private dining accommodations to ensure Primal-approved, gourmet fare at all but one lunch meal (hey, a wedding bumps us into the main dining room, where you can mingle with real, non-Primal humans and interest them in your meal choices!).

Mohonk

Spa: Mohonk's award winning spa offers an assortment of rejuvenating treatments including massages, skin care, water treatments, salon services, and meditation sessions. These options are separate from your PrimalCon registration fee and Mohonk room registration. Check their Spa web page or Email Mohonk Spa for details.

Participants

PrimalCon welcomes participants of all fitness and experience levels. Really, we make it work for everyone! If you're a hard core Crossfit Games type, we'll have stuff to test your mettle, including the Ultimate Frisbee battle royale and a unique team competition (details follow). If you are new to Primal living, relatively unfit, injured, whatever, don't worry – you will fit right in. Our staff makes a sincere effort to ensure that you receive appropriate guidance and pace yourself appropriately all weekend. We also offer extensive pick-and-choose flexibility on the daily agendas, so you can custom design your ideal experience. Yep, you can repeat Darryl Edwards three times if you want, or escape to the Mohonk spa for a massage if you're inclined.

Agenda

We have all kinds of fun and games planned at Mohonk Mountain House, highlighted by a hike to the stunning Sky Top Tower and, if you're up for a little Primal adventure, taking the notorious labyrinth – lemon squeeze rock scramble (expert-guided, and no special skills or equipment necessary) route to reach the summit.

Mohonk has a complete in-house recreation/special activities staff, so we have some super-fun group events planned! We'll have an evening glo-ball putting tournament and glo-Bocche ball tournament at our Primal campfire event. We'll put groups through the unique challenges of their low ropes course. And, Mohonk has designed a custom Primal team adventure race/scavenger hunt challenge that will be a worthy test of mind, body, and strategic group deployment. Winning team gets first in line for meals so the stakes are enormous!

Other fun and games at the resort include an 9-hole golf course, 18-hole disc golf course, an 18-hole putting green course, award winning gardens and maze, all kinds of water sports including kayaking, standup paddling and paddleboards on Lake Mohonk.

There are many other options at the resort if you want to break free and try something, including extensive hiking and running trails, mountain bike rentals, horseback riding, rock climbing, swimming, yoga, shuffleboard, tennis, volleyball, fishing, basketball, billiards, and horseshoes! Mark is overjoyed to be the guest of honor and watch his staff work hard while he focuses on Saturday afternoon's Ultimate Frisbee matches!

If you don't already know Mark, he is widely regarded as one of the leading voices in the Ancestral Health Movement, the best-selling author of The Primal Blueprint, and publisher of MarksDailyApple.com. Mark's Daily Apple, the highest ranked blog in the world in its category with 1.9 million unique visitors each month, has paved the way for hundreds of thousands of Primal enthusiasts to transform their lives and take personal responsibility for their health and well being.

Mark, who recently turned 60, looks 30 and thinks he's 18 when playing Ultimate, has a BA in Biology from Williams College and is a former world-class endurance athlete, with a 2:18 marathon and a fourth-place finish in the Hawaii Ironman to his credit. If you could envision a one-man band for health and fitness, Angelo is your guy. An expert in massage, injury rehabilitation, athletic training, natural movement, and strength training, Angelo is a real-life American Ninja warrior! Yes, he’s toe’d the line for the TV show tryouts. Check out his unbelievable Ninja warrior audition tape! (skip to 2:30 to see his phenomenal burpee pushup! FYI this video was shot during a single 2.5-hour workout. Skip to the end to see him collapse in exhaustion after another backflip burpee – hilarious!).

Mike D

Mike DiLandro

Mike is a living, breathing Primal success story from Mountainside, NJ. He transformed his physique and enjoyed amazing fitness breakthroughs after embracing Primal Blueprint diet and exercise principles in early 2012. His before and after shots reflect a loss of 30 pounds of body fat and the addition of five pounds of lean muscle. Interestingly, Mike was working out harder and longer, in the familiar chronic cardio pattern, to maintain his pre-Primal 205-pound physique than he is today.

Mike is an outgoing personality who is deeply passionate—compelled really—to introduce Primal living with virtually anyone who will listen! As he enjoyed immediate success (not only weight loss but ceasing statin meds), he got his family members on board. To date, his mother, brother, father and he have combined to lose over 110 pounds. John Durant

John Durant

John Durant is the author of The Paleo Manifesto. He studied evolutionary psychology at Harvard prior to founding Paleo NYC and Barefoot Runners NYC. In 2010 John helped popularize primal living through his feature in the New York Times and hilarious appearance on The Colbert Report. He has spoken at Google and Bloomberg, and has been profiled in the New Yorker. He blogs at HunterGatherer.com.

John will discuss the primal/paleo movement's ride to mainstream popularity, particularly his experience in the population center of New York City. John will also distinguish between the media's often cartoonish and distorted portrayal of the movement and the evolutionary fundamentals that frame and validate the movement's diet, exercise, and lifestyle recommendations. He will inspire you to help spread the word in your own community and continue to increase the popularity and knowledge of ancestral living practices.

Darryl Edwards

Darryl made his debut at the June 2013 PrimalCon Austin, and it's fair to say PrimalCon – and the city of Austin – will never be the same. This guy has a PhD in play, and brings 100 percent energy, passion and enthusiasm all day! Forget the friendly hellos in the morning and the traditional hugs goodbye after a weekend of bonding at PrimalCon – this guy greets you - or bids farewell – by hoisting you in the air for a quick set of fireman carry deep squats! No, not just the petites, even Strongmans like Brian Tabor!

Darryl is the author of Paleo Fitness, and founder of Fitness Explorer Training & Nutrition based in London, England. He is the creator of PRIMALity, and world-renowned as an expert teacher and lecturer on the Paleo lifestyle. He's a certified personal trainer and holds numerous certifications including GymJones, CrossFit, Olympic Lifting, MovNat and Kettlebell Strength & Conditioning. Darryl decided to become a movement coach after learning how to become fitter and stronger in his forties than at any period of his life. Dr. Mike Greenberg

Dr. Mike Greenberg

Dr. Mike is one of the world's leading alternative healers and peak performance facilitators. He has worked with numerous celebrities and world-class athletes, blending traditional chiropractic, acupuncture and nutritional care with advanced mind/body techniques such as Neuro-Emotional Anti-Sabotage Technique (NEAT). Dr. Mike received national notoriety with a USA Today cover story detailing how he helped Olympic gold medalist Kevin Young (pictured on left, along with Dr. Mike and Olympic gold medalist Quincy Watts) overcome his "fear of winning" to win the 1992 gold in Barcelona and set a world record in the 400 meter hurdles that still stands over 20 years later.

Brad Kearns

Brad Kearns is the coordinator of PrimalCon and Managing Editor of Primal Blueprint Publishing. He has worked closely with Mark Sisson since 2008 to publish books and promote the Primal Blueprint movement, including doing a 22-city tour to deliver the Primal Transformation Seminar in 2012. Brad is a former national champion and #3 world-ranked professional triathlete (coached by Mark Sisson!). Prior to joining the Primal team, Brad wrote nine other books on health, fitness, and peak performance for McGraw-Hill and other publishers, and delivered over 100 motivational talks to groups of athletes, corporate employees, and students of all ages.

Brad will conduct his popular PrimalCon clinic on how to implement correct running technique at all speeds, even for jogging. He will also provide insights on how to cultivate a pure motivation and ideal peak performance mindset for all manner of fitness and life goals. On Saturday morning at sunrise, Brad will conduct a clinic in Speed Golf, a popular underground sport that flaunts the stuffy, boring, time consuming elements of traditional golf by presenting a contest where your speed and your strokes count toward an aggregate score. The best part about Speed Golf is that it puts you into a zen state of mind where you hit your shots and stroke your putts by pure feel, on autopilot, thereby avoiding the common problem of getting overanalytical and allowing tension and mental chatter to compromise your performance.

 

Marsden and Whitmore

The authors of Paleo Primer and proprietors of Fitter London are jetting across the pond to share some of their magic and broad expertise at PrimalCon for the first time! At Fitter London, Matt and Keris deliver a holistic approach to health by combining a vast assortment of weekly expert-guided exercise classes, workshops, and group health transformations involving diet and cooking instruction. Keris is a Naturopathic Nutritional Therapist who embraced Primal/paleo lifestyle principles after suffering from a common female hormonal disorder known as Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome. Her ability to reclaim her health and vitality has inspired her to help others overcome similar health issues applying Primal/paleo methods.

Matt has been passionate about physical performance and sports from a young age. A successful rugby league and union player, he has also represented his county in hockey and skiing. With a love for cooking and a healthy appetite, he uses his nutrition knowledge to put together great tasting, healthy meals to compliment his active lifestyle and guide his clients and Fitter London members to do the same.

At PrimalCon, Matt and Keris will present a lively morning workout full of creative ideas to make strength training fun. Dr. Cate Shanahan

Dr. Cate is an author, health consultant and board-certified family physician who applies ancestral health principles to her Napa, CA practice.  Her journey into medicine originated from her experience as an elite middle distance runner at Rutgers University, where recurring injuries prevented her from reaching her goal of competing in the Olympic trials 1500 meter race. Inspired to discover the secrets of healing and optimum health, Cate studied biochemistry and genetics at Cornell University, then went on to earn a medical degree at Robert Wood Johnson Medical School. Cate practiced on the Hawaiian island of Kauai for ten years, where she studied ethnobotany and became intrigued by her healthiest patient’s culinary habits.

This experience caused her to rethink traditional notions of healthy eating and ultimately led to her groundbreaking book, Deep Nutrition. Cate made national news recently by bringing healthy eating and lifestyle principles to the Los Angeles Lakers. She advises the team how to eat to maximize performance, recovery and body composition. Registration

After purchasing your PrimalCon ticket, visit the PrimalCon online reservations page to book your room, or you can book over the phone at 845-255-1000 at the PrimalCon discount rate. There are four different room types at the Mohonk Mountain House: Classic, Country, Victorian, and Tower rooms. You can book solo, double, or triple occupancy rooms, including children as detailed below.

Following are the room rates for the three-night PrimalCon New York at the Mohonk Mountain House. Note: The resort adds a 12% gratuity to your bill so you don't have to worry about tipping during your stay.

Solo room: $329/night, $987 total plus 12% gratuity = $1,105
Double room: $468/night, $1404 total plus 12% gratuity = $1,572
Triple room: $653/night, $1,959 total plus 12% gratuity = $2,194


Children 0-4: Free
Children 4-12: $99/night additional charge
Children 13+: Charged as adults, $185 extra per night

If you would like to attend solo but want to share a room to save on expenses, we will help you find a suitable roommate offline, as we have done very successfully at past PrimalCons. In this case, at the shopping cart you can choose "$100 deposit" from the pop-up menu. Contact us by email with a description of your particulars/roommate preferences (Early to bed? Early to rise? Social? Quiet?, etc.). Your deposit will reserve your PrimalCon spot while we put you in touch with a potential (same-sex assumed) roommate.

Once you've agreed to room with another guest, you can contact us by phone (888-774-6259 or 310-317-4588) to complete your PrimalCon ticket purchase, then contact the resort and pay for your share of the room. For roommate bookings, you must book with resort staff by telephone (845-255-1000) so they can coordinate the various payments of roommates. We are confident we will succeed in finding you a suitable roommate or you can get a full refund on your deposit.

If you have local lodging options and would like to attend PrimalCon without staying at the Mohonk Mountain House, you need to purchase both a ticket and a Mohonk 3-day guest pass. The 3-day guest pass is $345 and will allow you access to the resort, eat the meals, and of course to attend PrimalCon on the property. If you plan to attend PrimalCon and don't need to stay at Mohonk, call 888-774-6259 or email us to secure your Mohonk guest pass after purchasing your PrimalCon ticket (includes parking at resort).

Cancellation policy: If you must cancel your trip, you can specify someone else to take your place at any time prior to the event, or we can offer you a full credit to a future PrimalCon event, or we will assess a 10 percent processing fee on your refund. Inside 30 days of the event, the processing fee is 15 percent. Email or call 888-774-6259 to discuss cancellation.

Return-attendee discount: $100 discount to all past PrimalCon attendees. Type "PRIMALCONALUM" in the "promo code" field at the top of the shopping cart during checkout to activate your discount, and note which event(s) you attended in the order notes field. Ala Carte Items

Alcohol: Drinks are available at the resort in the Carriage Lounge (open 12 noon – 11pm daily), and from your server at all meals. In order to provide the most fair and economical price for all guests regardless of their drinking habits, your alcohol will be charged to your personal guest room tab. Except at the Saturday night Primal campfire, we will provide the red wine and dark chocolate!

Recreation: Mohonk has a full slate of recreational activities outside of the PrimalCon agenda that you are welcome to try and pay the resort directly. For example, weekend golf, mountain bike rentals, the high ropes course, and the kids club and teen program. Details here…

Notes:

  • If you want to arrive to Mohonk early and/or stay late, Mohonk will honor our PrimalCon discount room rate as best they can for your extended stay, subject to room availability. The online reservation page allows you to book for June 4 arrival through June 9 departure. If you want to stay longer, call the reservations staff at 845-255-1000.
  • Room capacity: Maximum occupancy in a room is 3 adults or 2 adults and 3 kids.
  • While we do have our own private dining room for all but one meal, the resort likes to recommend a reasonable dress code in the dining areas. Consider bringing along a collared shirt and long pants for dining room attire.
  • Please Note: All single occupancy rooms are configured with either 1 King or 1 Queen. All rooms with more than 1 bed come standard with 1 Queen and 1 Twin. When 3 beds are needed a roll-away will be issued and the room configuration will be 1 Queen + 1 Twin + 1 Roll-away. Please keep this in mind when making arrangements for roommates.
