Join us at the fabulous Embassy Suites Mandalay Beach Resort for the fifth annual PrimalCon Oxnard event, Thursday, September 25th through Sunday, September 28th, 2014. Oxnard is where PrimalCon originated back in 2010, when 33 brave souls ventured to this Southern California beach to form the first-ever live connection of the MarksDailyApple community. Since then, PrimalCon has become a centerpiece of the primal/paleo/ancestral health movement, a one-of-a-kind weekend immersion to have tons of fun, connect with like-minded primal enthusiasts, learn from some of the most interesting and knowledgeable presenters in the world on an assortment of health, fitness, and lifestyle topics, and enjoy the absolutely phenomenal primal meals, snacks, and treats each day.

New for 2014, we are taking over the Embassy Suites Mandalay Beach Resort and will serve meals in their warm, comfortable indoor banquet room, as well as stage certain lectures indoors. This is a great balance to the extensive outdoor fun you will have at the adjacent Oxnard Beach Park.

Participants

PrimalCon welcomes participants of all fitness and experience levels. Really, we make it work for everyone! If you’re a hard core Crossfit Games type, we’ll have stuff to test your mettle, including the annual Ultimate Frisbee battle royale and the fight to the death (or at least for first served in dinner line honors) Survivor team challenge. If you are new to Primal living, relatively unfit, injured, whatever, don’t worry – you will fit right in. Our staff makes a sincere effort to ensure that you receive appropriate guidance and pace yourself appropriately all weekend. We also offer extensive pick-and-choose flexibility on the daily agendas, so you can custom design your ideal experience.

The Oxnard location is something special; you’ll stay in a fabulous oceanfront resort with all the amenities, but spend long, blissful hours in the adjacent Oxnard Beach Park, playing like a kid on the expansive grass fields, sand dunes, and ocean waves. Mark Sisson

Mark is overjoyed to be the guest of honor and watch his staff work hard while he focuses on Saturday afternoon's Ultimate Frisbee matches!

Chef Rachel Albert has been teaching whole foods cooking classes for more than 25 years. She has led more than 1200 cooking classes in 8 states. She has had more than 300 cooking and nutrition articles published in national and regional magazines and newspapers. She is the author of two cookbooks (one of which one multiple awards) and gluten free, dairy free cooking DVD set. She's taught at four Primalcon events so far (three in Oxnard, CA, and one in Lake Tahoe). Her classes are always popular and people love the food, the shopping and cooking times, the user-friendly recipes, and Rachel's extensive knowledge of nutrition.

This year she will be doing a lecture about ketogenic eating and cooking. Rachel became interested in ketogenic eating after her suffered a recurrence of the breast cancer she thought she'd beat. She is currently working on two Ketogenic Cookbooks (one for people with cancer, diabetes and epilepsy; the other will be a sugar free, low carb paleo version of her Ice Dream Cookbook). She is also creating a unique product that will help people understand and easily implement the diet without having to constantly crack calorie/carb/protein books and charts or do fancy calculations to figure out their macronutrient and portion needs. Tracy Barksdale

Tracy is a former schoolteacher who is now deeply committed to changing the world through her passion for Primal-aligned exercise and healthy living. Tracy specializes in introducing safe, fun physical exercise to people who have been defeated by the conventional fitness system. She believes everyone deserves to discover their true nature as playful human beings.

Tracy trains people to move gracefully, efficiently and safely, focusing on practicality and movement quality. Tracy helps organize the Austin Primal Living Group and the Austin Natural Movement Group to help grow a strong ancestral living community. Tracy is FMS level 2 certified and will be available to work one on one with people to go through a screen and corrective exercises to improve mobility and stability issues. Bryan Barksdale

Bryan Barksdale

Bryan is a veteran presenter at PrimalCon who discusses how primal eating and lifestyle practices can optimize brain function and prevent neurodegenerative disease. Bryan and his wife Tracy founded the very popular and active Austin Primal Living Group which maintains over 500 members. Bryan is currently pursuing an MD/PhD at UTMB/UT Austin in neuroscience and is studying the application of ketosis in the treatment of neurodegenerative diseases.


 

Katie Bowman

We are eager to welcome an exciting new presenter to the lineup, a local to the Oxnard/Ventura-area no less, and a rising star in the world of biomechanics, body alignment and restorative exercise. With radical, science-based health directives, Katy is taking the health-and-wellness world by storm with her bold "exercise is not movement" platform. A biomechanist by training and a problem-solver at heart, Katy helps you reduce chronic pain, increase bone density, and improve metabolic health through proper alignment and movement.

Her alternatively witty and sciency blog, KatySays.com, was awarded the 2014 "Best of...Science Blogs" by Paleo Magazine. She also writes for Prevention, IDEA, and Self, is regularly featured on radio and television talk shows and news segments, and created a DVD series called "Aligned and Well". Katy's groundbreaking work in pelvic floor restoration has made her Restorative Exercise Institute particularly popular with midwives, OBGYNs, and others concerned with pelvic mobility, strength, and health. Darryl Edwards

Darryl made his debut at the June 2013 PrimalCon Austin, and it's fair to say PrimalCon – and the city of Austin – will never be the same. This guy has a PhD in play, and brings 100 percent energy, passion and enthusiasm all day! Forget the friendly hellos in the morning and the traditional hugs goodbye after a weekend of bonding at PrimalCon – this guy greets you - or bids farewell – by hoisting you in the air for a quick set of fireman carry deep squats! No, not just the petites, even Strongmans like Brian Tabor!

Darryl is the author of Paleo Fitness, and founder of Fitness Explorer Training & Nutrition based in London, England. He is the creator of PRIMALity, and world-renowned as an expert teacher and lecturer on the Paleo lifestyle. He's a certified personal trainer and holds numerous certifications including GymJones, CrossFit, Olympic Lifting, MovNat and Kettlebell Strength & Conditioning. Darryl decided to become a movement coach after learning how to become fitter and stronger in his forties than at any period of his life. Brad Kearns is the coordinator of PrimalCon and Managing Editor of Primal Blueprint Publishing. He has worked closely with Mark Sisson since 2008 to publish books and promote the Primal Blueprint movement, including doing a 22-city tour to deliver the Primal Transformation Seminar in 2012. Brad is a former national champion and #3 world-ranked professional triathlete (coached by Mark Sisson!). Prior to joining the Primal team, Brad wrote nine other books on health, fitness, and peak performance for McGraw-Hill and other publishers, and delivered over 100 motivational talks to groups of athletes, corporate employees, and students of all ages.

Brad will conduct a clinic on how to run with proper technique, and also present a lecture on how to stay motivated and balanced for peak performance in all areas of life, including diet, exercise, career goals, and personal goals. Vanessa and Adam Lambert

Vanessa and Adam will be teaching the fundamentals of strength training, including Olympic lifting, gymnastics and calisthenics. Vanessa, AKA Nesta Rae, one of Primal Blueprint’s own, has been a gymnast and competitive athlete her entire life (fitness reel). Adam is Battalion Chief and Physical Fitness Coordinator for Cal Fire. The two have been CrossFit games competitors (3rd place Affiliate team 2009), surfers, and avid Primal advocates for years. Vanessa is the creator and co-host of the Primal Blueprint Luxury Retreat, and also oversees the Primal Blueprint Personal Coaching program.

Vanessa and Adam will teach you safe lifting techniques with lightweight PVC pipes and some real weights. They will also teach you the fundamentals of basic gymnastics and fun, safe, effective outdoor movements. Dr. Dawn is an expert in the field of physical therapy, movement dysfunctions, and fascial fitness. She will present, along with her associate Coach Kimmie, a Yoga Tune Up® therapy ball rolling session. Yoga Tune Up is geared toward releasing the fascial restrictions and adhesions that ultimately lead to injury, pain, and reduced mobility. These adhesions are bands of painful rigid tissue that usually form in muscles, tendon and ligaments, can be caused from chronic tension or tightness, overuse and injuries. Adhesions can block circulation and cause pain, inflammation, limited mobility and affect overall performance and quality of life.

This workshop will guide you through proper ball placement and movement patterns for optimal myofascial release. Starting with upper body, rolling will target trigger points and tissues that help open the shoulders and loosen the neck. Attention will then shift to the lower body ultimately creating freedom of movement in hips, legs and feet. This proven method of rolling out tissue tension throughout the body will leave you feeling better, stronger, happier and more relaxed. Brian is the owner of Strong Made Simple in San Diego, CA, a MovNat Certification Team Instructor, 2010 North American Strongman 175# National Champion, and is currently qualified to compete internationally at the Arnold Fitness Expo in March, 2013.

Since moving from the midwest to San Diego to pursue a Master of Science in Exercise Physiology he has worked with strength and conditioning programs from the Navy SEALs Tactical Athlete Program, SDSU and UCSD Athletics, as well as training a large variety of weekend warriors and clients. He will be sharing his knowledge and experience of strength & conditioning, natural movement, and strongman to translate that to lifting and carrying stones and other objects outdoors.

Oxnard is about 60 minutes North of Los Angeles proper (longer at rush hours), and about 30 minutes South of Santa Barbara on gold coast of Ventura County coast. For air travel, Los Angeles International (LAX) and Burbank (BUR) airports are your best choices. Commuter air service is offered from Santa Barbara airport. Residents of Bay Area/Northern California are recommended to drive (~6 hours from San Francisco).

The Metrolink train’s Ventura county line will take you quickly from Burbank airport to Oxnard four times per day. If you need transportation from the Oxnard station to the resort, email your arrival time and our staff will attempt to accommodate you. Taxi service is also available. The Roadrunner shuttle offers service from both LAX and BUR to your destination in Oxnard.
